Are you planning to work in Malta? Starting 1 August 2025, Malta will implement the first phase of its new Labour Migration Policy, which introduces major updates to how non-EU workers apply for and renew their work permits.
Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming changes and how they can affect your path to working in Europe.
1. Work Permit Fees Are Increasing
Currently, applying for a Single Work Permit in Malta costs €300. As of 1 August 2025, the fee for first-time applications will double to €600.
This change is part of the government’s strategy to encourage responsible hiring practices and retain skilled workers for longer periods.
2. Lower Renewal Fees & Longer Permit Durations
There is good news for those already working in Malta:
Renewal fees will decrease to €150 per year.
If your job contract is valid for two years, you can renew your permit for the full period instead of annually.
This is designed to support long-term employment and reduce the administrative burden on both workers and employers.
3. 30-Day Grace Period if You Lose Your Job
If you lose your job, you’ll now have a 30-day grace period to find a new one, with the possibility of extending this by another 30 days if you can prove you’re financially stable.
This gives workers more time and flexibility to stay in the country legally while transitioning between jobs.
4. Stricter Rules for Employers
Under the new policy:
Employers who dismiss foreign workers without valid reasons could face temporary hiring bans for similar positions.
Companies must advertise open roles to Maltese or EU/EEA citizens first.
Authorities will closely monitor termination rates to identify patterns of abuse or bad faith hiring.
These measures aim to protect migrant workers and prioritize fair recruitment.
5. Special Rules for Healthcare and Care Workers
Those working in elderly care, disability care, or the healthcare sector will benefit from:
A flat fee of €150 for all permit-related applications.
Priority processing and exemptions from some of the standard restrictions.
6. Updated Salary Requirements for Special Work Permits
Key Employee Initiative (KEI): Minimum salary set at €45,000/year.
Single Employment Initiative (SEI): Minimum salary set at €30,000/year.
These thresholds reflect Malta’s effort to attract and retain highly qualified professionals.
